While it’s true that lawns require a lot of care during the spring, summer and fall, you cannot ignore it entirely during the winter, as proper lawn care during the colder months will ensure it is in great shape come spring.

In order to enjoy your lawn and maintain its condition, you must consider the following tips:

Aerate and Fertilize

Head out to your lawn and aerate right before your area’s first expected frost date. This process will allow your lawn to breathe before the grass goes dormant and will help relieve any compaction that has built up during the warmer months. After opening up your lawn, you must fertilize, and this process will give your grass the essential nutrients it needs to prepare for winter. Grass roots will absorb and store the nutrients during the winter months, and in the spring, your lawn will tap into those stored nutrients for a head start, making it a deeper, lush green. Caring for your lawn properly will also help prevent weeds, pests and diseases from moving in once it warms up.

Keep Your Lawn Clean

Leaves will pile up on your lawn during fall; if they are not cleared, your lawn can suffocate before winter. Leaves that are left on the lawn can also become wet and invite disease. Rake them up and remove them; if they are not too thick or wet, you can mulch them with your mower. Don’t forget to remove furniture and debris from your lawn.

Try to Avoid Lawn Traffic

When a lawn is dormant or frosted, you must avoid walking on it too much because even strong grass can become weak if the same path is walked over too many times.

Treat Ice Carefully

You must try to keep driveways, walkways, and sidewalks clear of ice and snow to create a safe and clear path.

Prepare Before It’s Too Late!

You need to have a winter lawn care plan in place in advance. Preparing ahead of time will ensure your lawn is beautiful and lush come spring, and you will not encounter any headaches. As soon as you notice a chill in the air, keep your eye on the forecast and give yourself enough time to implement your plan. Applying lawn care after the first frost arrives means you’re too late—don’t leave this task to the last minute.
