Becoming a new homeowner for the first time is an exciting experience. There are so many ideas on how to start making your house a home. But don’t forget about the outdoors, particularly lawn maintenance. It’s easy to get caught up with all the ideas for decorating your home until you walk out one day and notice your grass no longer looks the same when it was staged for the open house. It takes constant lawn care and maintenance to keep your lawn looking pristine and well-manicured.

Proper lawn maintenance starts with the right tools. However, most first-time homeowners don’t have their tools ready and on hand in the garage. The lawn care department at your local hardware store can be daunting; with so many options to choose from it could be hard to tell what you really need and what is not a necessity. This can be even more difficult, considering most new home buyers are on a tight budget, which is why we recommend sticking to the basics for now. Before heading outdoors, here are our 6 essential lawn care tools that new homeowners should start with:

Lawn Mower

A lawnmower is obviously an essential tool for maintaining your yard. There are a variety of lawn mower styles to choose from depending on your lawn size and terrain. For smaller yards, a heavy-duty mower wouldn’t give you the same value. We recommend  a push mower or even a smaller electric mower for better ease.

Rake

A rake is generally inexpensive, but it’s one of the most useful and versatile tools you’ll use for lawn maintenance. Surprisingly, it can help with many tasks such as cleaning debris, leaves and spreading fertilizer.  When choosing a rake, there’s no real trick to it except to ensure it is not too heavy to maneuver; steel rakes are usually heavier while wood ones are easier to manage. Added Tip: Have rakes of different sizes. Different-sized rakes are helpful when trying to achieve a specific spread or pick-up. So to save yourself a trip back to the hardware store and buy two different-sized rakes.

Shovel

A shovel is a simple tool that every homeowner should have on hand. Even if you don’t plan to do landscaping or gardening, you never know when you might have emergency work or repair. It’s important to have the ability to quickly move soil or ground to get to your home’s foundation.

Hose

A hose is needed for many tasks, such as watering grass and plants, rinsing off your patio, washing your car, and maybe even bathing your pet outdoors.  When choosing a hose, there’s no real trick except to factor in the length you will need to reach across your yard. Choose a high-quality hose as they’re prone to breaking and tears. We recommend choosing a hose made from good material with flexibility.

Pruner

If you have small trees or shrubs in your yard, you’re going to need a hand pruner. Pruners are used to remove dead or unwanted limbs from trees and shrubs, add design and shape to plants, and keep perennial flowers neatly trimmed. Pruning your bushes or plants also helps with better growth and regeneration.

Gloves

You should always wear a pair of gardening gloves when you are doing yard work. Wearing gloves will help protect your hands from blisters, scrapes, thorns, cuts, and more. You’ll be able to do more without getting your hands dirty. Don’t wear rubber or latex gloves, these are prone to rips and will leave your hands sweaty. We recommend getting gardening gloves made from cotton materials that will help your skin breathe.
